Aesthetic Qualities and Distinctive Style

   Articles and document links

There is a fantastic article regarding Aesthetic Qualities and Style by David Williams who is a highly regarded and experienced art teacher in Melbourne, Australia.

Another great powerpoint in relation to Aesthetic Qualities and Style. It uses Turner as an example.

Question: Discuss how aesthetic qualities contribute to the style of the artwork.

Pam Hallandal, Self Portrait, charcoal and pastel drawing on paper, 1985. (image from 2012 Studio Arts exam)

(a sample answer below)

Aesthetic qualities are evident throughout this artwork by Hallandal. The Self Portrait displays line and tone in conjunction with pastel and charcoal creating a depressing and somber style.

The dark tones of charcoal throughout the artwork on the body, weighs down the subject, creating the depressed and somber style. The highlighted areas on the face and on the building outside add contrast between the dark mood internally and the hazy uncertainty of the outside world further adding to the somber style of the Self Portrait.

Hallandal further displays the somber style by a slight tilt in the body adding discord through the work. The window and building are not in alignment, adding to the unbalanced of the world outside.
